Hello, I'm Rich

Hello, I'm Rich

It always makes me laugh when I say "Hi, I'm Rich" because back when I was a teenager, I was working at a restaurant, and one day the manager came in and told me that there was a new girl that I needed to train.  So, I walked over to this new girl (who wasn't that hard to look at), and loudly proclaimed "Hi, I'm Rich".  She looked at me kind of funny, then about a dozen of my co-workers started laughing out loud because it sounded like I had unsuccessfully tried to use the world's worst pickup line.

I've read a number of blogs for a number of years, commenting frequently on a few, and thanks to one blogger that goes by the name Ron who said he would be interested in reading a blog about my world, I decided to finally try to give him and others a glimpse into that world.

Typically a story starts with a logical starting point, or a beginning that methodically explains the main characters, but I've decided to just jump right in with what I'm doing right now and hope that everyone that's interested can eventually follow what is going on (after all, if you met me in person you'd have to do the same thing).

My quick and dirty background is that I live in Oklahoma and make my living on a small farm raising cattle and growing small grains like wheat and grain sorghum, so most of this blog will be about the farm along with some deer hunting, gardening, bio-char, and everything else I'm interested at the time.

So, if you don't like cattle, farming, tractors, deer hunting, gardening, little bulldozers, muddy trucks, chainsaws, bio-char, or welding then this blog might not be for you.   If you are interested in some of that stuff then you might be able to tolerate this blog (I'm not making any promises though).

  1. "Watch out for the Bull"... lol... great name, Rich. I've always felt guilty that you have posted such interesting, funny, and valuable stuff, and it has been buried in the comments in my blogs... some of which no longer exist.

I feel pretty cool when I say that I know this Rich guy in Oklahoma. :)

    1. I never would have thought that it would be that hard to come up with a name, but I'm always telling everyone to watch out for the bulls whenever they come onto the farm and I also don't want anyone to take anything I say as gospel (or something like that).

There's no reason to feel guilty about deleting anything I've written on any blog, every comment I make is temporary or "in the moment", blah, blah, blah. As long as someone might have read it, I'm satisfied.

"That Rich Guy from Oklahoma" might make a decent blog name.

  2. I'm glad that you finally succumbed to Ron's peer pressure. It will make my mornings just a bit more entertaining reading your blog.

By coincidence, I will be driving through Oklahoma (via I35) maybe Saturday night and Sunday morning on my way to Dallas. It will be my first visit to your state in probably 20 years. This time I should be old enough to appreciate it because the last time I didn't pay attention and don't remember much. If you know of any interesting sites along I35, let me know.

    1. I don't tend to be easily peer-pressurized, so it's not really Ron's fault that I'm subjecting to the world to a blog about me.

I've read a lot of blogs, interacted on a few, and have always thought that it would only be fair to show my world to some of the people that let me into their world through their blogs. Ron has shared his world with me, so maybe he can take part of the credit for this blog.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The last time I remember going to it was a long time ago back in elementary school, I'm not even sure what is on display today.

And, there is Oklahoma City Bricktown, but it's mostly restaurants, the baseball stadium, etc. I haven't been down there since I went to a baseball game years ago.

Other than that, I always like to look at the scenery, it's mainly open grassland and wheat fields and can be kind of bleak looking this time of year. but I kind of like that.

I live north of Oklahoma City and a little north or south of Stillwater, a little to the west (I'm being a little vague if you can't tell), if you want to get an idea of the area I'm talking about whenever I'm writing about the farm. If I see any cars with Iowa tags this weekend, I'll wave at them so keep a lookout for me.

    1. I like growing sorghum and at the same time I hate it.

I've planted grain sorghum for a grain harvest, and sorghum-sudangrass for both grazing and hay. This year, I'm planning to plant a grain sorghum crop, some sorghum-sudangrass for both grazing and hay, and some sorghum as a cover crop on the farm and the garden.

I'll try to share my successes and failures, and you'll probably find out why I have such a love/hate relationship with sorghum.

  4. Keeping vague is the best policy in my opinion. I've had a run-in before with a cyber stalker and it wasn't pretty. That is why I use an alias and switch important details when it comes to describing where I live.
